The Candidates
Christy Hughes
I started my Riverside career in 1978 at Hillcrest elementary. I was very active in school and in the community. After graduating in 1991, I attended Penn State Beaver and have remained a Riverside resident for nearly 50 years. My husband and I were very pleased to be able to raise our two boys in the community we’ve always cherished. They both graduated from Riverside, class of 2018 and class of 2021.
Since 1995, I have been involved with the Riverside Football program as a coaches wife, a booster, booster president and a parent, while also supporting our baseball, basketball, track and soccer programs. One of my greatest joys has been being part of our high school musical program. I’ve had the pleasure of working on costuming the musicals for the last 11 years. What great talent we have at Riverside! I have also been the organizer of Panther Night for over 20 years.
I joined the school board 8 years ago.
It has been my pleasure to serve this district in so many different capacities. Knowing that I have been a part of our educational accomplishments and done my best to serve our students and staff has made my time on the board enjoyable.
Kasey Kraus
My lifelong passion for learning started at Riverside, and I was part of the graduating class of 1999. I attended Clarion University and in 2003 earned a BA in English with a concentration in writing. In 2010 I graduated from Carlow University, earning a Master’s of Education with a secondary specialization. I am currently enrolled at Slippery Rock University in a second Master’s program for K-12 Reading Specialist.
My husband, Ronald Kraus, also attended Riverside as did his father and both of my parents. We come from a long line of Panthers and our children Oliver and Aribella are third generation Riverside attendees, Oliver in 6th grade and Ari in 3rd.
I have worked with autistic children for 4 years before earning my teaching certification and starting in the middle school at Seneca Valley in 2007. There I was the Middle school English department chairperson for past five years. I have also coached their girls middle school soccer team since 2017.
I have served the Riverside School Board for one-term. As a public school teacher in a different district, I have working knowledge of the public education system, what educators face, and how to support students. Each decision I make is with careful consideration of the impact on the entire student body and educational process.
My goal is to make decisions that lead to growth and help Riverside shine even brighter than it already does by improving the infrastructure and safety of our aging facilities; continuing to develop an environment where students of all backgrounds and ability levels can find success in a nurturing environment that provides them with the necessary 21st century skills to become concerned, productive citizens of our amazing community; and preparing students for a bright, successful, and fulfilling future.
Jamie Reed Miller
I am Riverside High School graduate, year of 2000. I continued my education with a Bachelor of Arts degree and accounting major from Washington and Jefferson college.
I am employed as an IT and process auditor for financial statement audits and service organization control reports for 13 years at a big 4 accounting firm and an internal audit director for global program audit team, application technology team for finance and risk management, and technology governance audit team for the past 6 years. This experience provides insight into financial statements, budgets, controls, privacy, program and project management, governance best practices and planning for capital expenditures and end of life assets.
My education included accounting for government entities and financial statement reporting provides a specific perspective into those elements of board business. I am a Beaver valley intermediate unit board member and have 3 children in the district – third grade, 2nd grade and 3 year old.
Shawn Plassmeyer
I am a 1994 graduate of Riverside and reside in North Sewickley with my wife, JoyLyn, a 1995 Riverside graduate.
We have two fantastic children, Grace and McCartney. I have owned and operated my own business, Plassmeyer Towing, in the district for nearly 20 years. My wife JoyLyn, has taught kindergarten at Riverside since 1999. Both of our families have been embedded in the Riverside School District since its very beginnings. There was never any question or doubt after our marriage on where we wanted to continue our lives and raise our children. The passion that I have for Riverside is why I chose 12 years ago to serve this district and our community.
I wanted to ensure that my children and the children of my family and friends could be afforded the same quality education and memorable experiences that I was able to. We sometimes take it for granted how wonderful it is, living in a small, tight knit community. We don’t have a downtown or a city center.
Riverside serves as our community hub and it is imperative that we keep that hub prosperous and growing. I feel very confidently that our board has done well by the district and we continue to ensure the long term viability of our school. I don’t take it for granted that the voters of our district have entrusted me with these responsibilities and I very much appreciate your continued support.
David V. Steinbach
I graduated from Riverside in 1996. I have 4 kids that attend the district. As a practicing veterinarian, I know how important a good education is and that a firm foundation is vital in helping students achieve their goals. Also as a father of a special needs child, I have been a strong advocate for the Special Education community.
I have enjoyed my eight years on the board and wish to continue to make Riverside the gem of Beaver County.
